This California girl is best known for her role as Michelle Tanner in the 1980's and 90's family sitcom, Full House. Both Ashley and her twin sister, Mary-Kate Olsen began work on the show when they were only nine months old. Executives of the show wanted to use twins as to avoid violating child labor laws. The twins originally earned $4,000 per episode. Two years later their attorney, Robert Thorne, negotiated a pay raise to $25,000 per episode and then eventually to $80,000. Ashley’s net worth is now estimated at $150 million, as she has since ventured into the world of business merchandising and fashion.
In the early 1990's, Ashley and her sister formed the production company, Dualstar. Upon their eighteenth birthday, they both became co-presidents of their company.
The Olsen twins gained immense popularity and found themselves being featured in many movies geared towards children. Their first movie was To Grandmother’s House We Go, which aired on ABC. Ashley earned $125,000 for her work. Many of these movies, including Billboard Dad, were either made for television or were direct-to-video releases. However, both twins starred in the 1995 feature film It Takes Two featuring Kirstie Alley and Steve Guttenberg.
They were also featured in two other sitcoms, Two of a Kind and So Little Time, but neither show received the success or acclaim of Full House.
The feature film New York Minute was Ashley's last acting job. She starred in the movie alongside Mary-Kate Olsen and Eugene Levy. She had said that she no longer felt a connection to acting. Both Ashley and Mary-Kate have said that if they return to the movie business they will likely only work as producers, behind the camera. However, both have indicated that they see the fashion industry to be their future, rather than film.
Ashley Olsen attended New York University for a little over a year. However, she withdrew from classes shortly after Mary-Kate's withdrawal and dedicated more of her time to her company and business ventures.
Ashley then co-founded several clothing and accessory lines, including the luxury brand The Row and StyleMint. Ashley and Mary-Kate have also received acclaim for their less expensive line, Elizabeth and James. Having proved successful as businesswomen and fashion designers, the duo won the WSJ Innovator of the Year award in 2012. They also received the top prize at the CFDA Fashion Awards the same year.
Ashley Olsen continues to dedicate herself to her career in the fashion industry. In an interview with Net-a-Porter’s The Edit, she and Mary-Kate were dubbed “icons of the future.”
