An ambitious new mod for Grand Theft Auto V takes the game into outer space, with the appropriately titled Grand Theft Space tasking players with fending off antagonistic alien threats and saving planet Earth in the process.

The new mod is being is being created by a team working under the popular modder sollaholla, with it including shuttles and lunar vehicles for players to jack, alongside a host of extraterrestrial enemies to zap. The modding team will also allow players to land on the surface of planets, explore new planets outside of the solar system and play through four brand new missions at launch.

Here’s the official synopsis for the mod:

“The Earth has been alone in this galaxy since the very moment it was formed, but far far away in another galaxy, there was intelligent life peering at the people of earth for a millennium. This life was not the friendly life we would like to believe. The NASA research team have found remnants of alien spaceship parts scattered around the state of San Andreas. We never thought that these intelligent life-forms would ever reach our planet; but they’re coming and they’re not on our side. It’s your mission to take out these alien scum before they reach earth.”

Considering the size of the GTA V modding community, it’s surprising that no one has attempted to take the series into space before. It remains to be seen whether or not sollaholla and his team are successful in lifting the open-world game outside of its Earthly confines, but we’re definitely intrigued by what sounds like a cross between GTA and space exploration games such as Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous, albeit on a much smaller scale.
