EA and Tony Hawk could be collaborating on Skate 4, judging by coincidental hints regarding a brand new skateboarding game.
In an interview with Jenkem Magazine on January 13, Tony Hawk revealed that he is in preliminary talks for a brand new skateboarding game, though is no longer working alongside Activision. When asked if he had any more skateboarding games on the horizon, Hawk said: “Not from Activision. I’m potentially working on something but it’s so early I couldn’t talk about it. I don’t have any contracts signed but it’s exciting. I feel like it’s with the right people so I should know more in the next couple months.”
The Tony Hawk series was initially developed by Neversoft, but after the arrival of EA’s Skate series Activision was “looking at half the sales going forward for [the Tony Hawk] series,” according to Hawk. the developer eventually brought an end to the franchise with 2007’s Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground, before Robomodo took over for a few underwhelming releases, including Tony Hawk: Ride and the most recent Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5.
While EA’s Skate attracted higher levels of praise than later entries in the Tony Hawk series, the series was shelved by EA as a result of declining profits. However, Skate 3 later received a new burst in popularity after becoming popular with YouTube Let’s Players, with many calling for a Skate 4 to be released. Now EA community manager Daniel Lingen has dropped a major hint that this could be the case, taking to Twitter last weekend in order to tweet out the simple message: “#skate4.”

With Lingen’s curious tweet only two weeks removed from Hawk’s revelation that he’s potentially working on another skateboarding game, could it be possible that Hawk is working alongside EA for Skate 4? Though this is only speculation at this point, the timing seems a little too coincidental for it to go unmentioned. Hopefully this means that we’ll finally see the series taken off the shelf, and a fitting new chapter in the Tony Hawk video game legacy to wash away the bad taste of THPS 5.
