Terry Fox inspired millions upon millions of people not only when he ran across Canada with an amputated leg to raise money for cancer research but in the decades following his death as yearly Terry Fox runs are held across the country in September. The events have raised almost $500 million in total.
While no one Terry Fox event is better than the other (they’re all incredible), here are 10 noteworthy Terry Fox run events province by province.
The McKenzie Towne Terry Fox Run will start at the Towne Hall and finish at Inverness Pond. The run will take place from 9am until 12pm.
The New Westminster Run will take place at Queen's Park – registration is from 9-9:45am and the run begins at 10am, wrapping up at noon. There’s a 10km, 7.5km, 5 km, 2.5km, and paths are suitable for bikes, wheelchairs/strollers, and rollerblades. Dogs that are on a leash are also welcome.
A late afternoon 2pm start is scheduled for the Silver Ridge Terry Fox Run in Manitoba. Participants should meet at Old Bluff Creek Community Hall.
The Fredericton Run will begin at 2pm but registration starts at 1pm. Meet fellow runners at the Lighthouse on the Green and join a 1K or 5K where you can walk, jog, or cycle with a stroller or a dog on a leash. It’s also wheelchair accessible.
The community of Savage Cove is getting together at the church parking lot for the Run – wheelchairs, strollers, rollerblades, bikes, and dogs on a leash are all welcome.
Scheduled for a 1pm start, Dartmouth will celebrate the legacy of Terry Fox with a run commencing at Sullivan's Pond. You can walk, bike or run.
The Guelph Terry Fox Run route is 10km and has a starting point at Silvercreek Park (at the corner of Wellington Street and Edinburgh Road). The event runs from 8am-12:30pm.
Prince Edward Island
Montague runners will keep the Terry Fox tradition alive with a 1K or 5K route that begins at Confederation Train Station-Confederation Trail. The route is accessible to bicycles, wheelchairs, rollerblades, and strollers.
At 9:45am the community of Greenfield Park will get together at Parc Pierre Laporte Park (located at 195 rue Empire Street) for their annual Terry Fox run.
If you live in the Hafford area then get to the Hafford Innovation Credit Union on September 18th for a noontime race start.
